'Opeaka'a Falls & Spouting Horn (Friday May 13)

Friday May 13

Today we went out on our own to see some of the sites of this beautiful island. Since Mom, Bob, Chris and I had already been to Kauai, and had done a driving island tour, we decided to conduct our own tour instead of paying someone else to do it.

Chris and Lainey wanted to take pictures of themselves with my camera. What a goof ball this little man is

Lainey wanted to take a picture of Chris and me... such a momma's boy

Chris wanted to take a picture of the falls on his own... he's getting pretty good at taking pictures

Across the street from the 'Opeaka'a Falls lookout, there was a lookout to the Wailua River

Down to the south end of the island is Spouting Horn

Lawa'i Road
Po'ipu, South Kauai

This natural wonder occurs as water rushes under a lava shelf and bursts through a small opening at the surface. Every wave produces another spray. Spouting Horn frequently spurts salt water 50 feet into the air. The phenomina is especially exciting at sunset when the spray becomes incandescent with the colors of the rainbow.

This particular blowhole is different from others found throughout the state as another hole nearby only blows air, making a loud groaning sound. Legend states that this coast was guarded by a large mo'o (lizard) who ate everyone who tried to fish or swim here. One day, a man named Liko entered the water.

When the mo'o went to attack him, he swam under the lava shelf and escaped through the hole. The mo'o became stuck and was never able to get out. The groaning is the cry of hunger and pain from the lizard still trapped under the rocks.

a little spray

Chris fell asleep on the way here, so he was a little crabby after waking up

I think Jared might actually be starting to smile!

not sure what was up with the leg, but he sure is cute!

Jared's phone call that finally got him into a good mood that day :-)

Doing a little "Chicken Dance"
"Here Chickens"

For some reason he was afraid of the chickens that are all over the island. He was throwing little sticks at them to try and scare them off. It was pretty funny to watch him.
